Who We Are

Every day FLOX works to put community back in design. Using facilitation, FLOX engages social impact leaders to collaboratively design their community and member engagement models, plan for the future, and develop stronger leadership teams. Rooted in black feminist theory, Afrofuturism, and social justice. FLOX is on a mission to re-weave communities one conversation at at time.

Our name is at the root of who we are

FLOX is named after a scientific process called FLOXing - it refers to the moment and process when a new DNA sequence sandwiches a gene, changing it, interrupting it. Making it new. We are FLOXing in the world of design, management and social justice - inserting new ways of being and doing within systems.

Our Journey

2019

The experiment

FLOX began as an experiment in community design (FLOX Labs) in January 2019. A small group of designers, futurists, creatives and nonprofit professionals gathered 200 people over 10 dinners in NYC to sketch, dream and solve pressing issues together in New York City and San Francisco.

2020

The launch

FLOX Studio launched in August 2020 and built upon the gatherings by providing new offerings in strategic management consulting and design education. FLOX has worked with clients ranging from national nonprofit advocacy organizations fighting for democracy (The Movement Voter Project) to a community foundation co- designing a micro- grant program to accelerate economic justice in Brooklyn, NY.

2021

The expansion

In the Summer of 2021, FLOX launched Community Design For Leaders, a learning lab for social justice curious designers, currently offered on a rolling basis, for your tailored organization.
